SUMMARY

Chronic pain in children and adolescents is a frequent problem with a strong impact on the person, the family and society in general. One of the most frequent chronic pain problems is recurrent abdominal pain (DAR).

The available evidence shows that psychological interventions are effective for chronic pain problems. However, prevention is still a challenge. The majority of the interventions are designed and implemented with children with severe and long-lasting chronic pain, even though it is widely recognized that intervention could be more effective if applied as soon as the problem appears.

In this project, we have designed an intervention program for children with DAR and their parents —DARWeb— in order to offer tools that help families to cope with the problem and keep the pain from interfering in the long term.

The programme is made up of seven work units designed for adolescents with DAR (between 9 and 16 years old) and seven units for parents. These units provide information and strategies to deal with the situation, as well as relaxation techniques, distraction methods and training to respond to the child’s pain behaviours, among others.
